4.0 out of 5 stars Fun, funny and imaginative
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 6, 2015
Here we have an enjoyable, vibrant, colourful, fun and funny slice of animation - it's pretty safe for all the family and showcases some good tunes along the way. Essentially it's a good old fashioned love triangle with a dose of Mexican folklore thrown in. The story is narrated to tướng us (and a small group of kids) by a museum tour guide as she recounts the story of three childhood friends - Joaquín, Manolo and Maria. Maria is the object of the boys affections but it appears only one of them can win the girl. The twist to tướng the tale lies in the subplot as we're introduced to tướng two spirits of the afterlife (just go with it) who phối up a wager between themselves as to tướng which lad will marry Maria. Their involvement will of course have a part to tướng play in the outcome. Most of the usual ingredients are here for this kind of animated fare. Family friendly chuckles with the odd big laugh. Terrific animation which gets even better (and freakier) in the later stages as we're introduced to tướng The Land of the Remembered and The Land of the Forgotten. Quality songs including reworked versions of the likes of Mumford and Sons, Radiohead, Elvis and Rod Stewart alongside original tunes. A stellar voice cast with Ron Perlman being the standout for bủ as the most interesting and mischievous character. It all adds up to tướng a neat little, imaginative package. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL, ENGROSSING, LIFE-AFFIRMING, FILM.

This is a review of the standard Region B2 Blu-ray. My husband and I watched the Pixar film 'Coco', on the back of warm reviews and the 'Oscar', and were curiously underwhelmed and disappointed by it. The following day, whilst exploring Amazon reviews of it, I noted the number of reviewers who recommended 'The Book of Life', and said it was much better. So last night, we watched it, and WOW were those reviewers correct! It is SO much better in every respect. The plot of 'The Book of Life' is excellent, and great fun, the characters are rich and layered, and the whole look of the film is ví beautiful, colourful and engrossing. There is plenty of exciting action (certainly more phàn nàn enough to tướng keep the attention of youngsters), and a number of lovable baddies! The music is a wonderful mixture of Mexican, classical and golden pop songs. And the animals, unlike in 'Coco', are not goofy & stupid, but some delightful pigs and some awesome bulls. We especially loved the sly little nod to tướng the Balrog in 'Lord of the Rings'! There are some other nice little references too. This is an altogether more engaging and complex film phàn nàn 'Coco', and left us saying 'Wow'. It satisfied and entertained in equal measure, and is truly life-affirming.

5.0 out of 5 stars Visually stunning animation; something totally new
Reviewed in Canada on December 29, 2014
Just took my kids to tướng this movie yesterday; it is ví visually stunning that I will go back all by myself to tướng enjoy it again, and I've preordered this disc as well as the The Art Of to tướng accompany it. What a treat; the amount of detail that went into the visual crafting is just astonishing. What a fun torment this must have been to tướng work on, for the animation studio. Wow! For parents who are dead bored of the Disney and Pixar machines...this is a nice new surprise. And, nice music: the Toro Apology tuy nhiên is very beautiful; now there's a love song! PS: we've now had the movie for almost a couple weeks now and my kids watch the Toro Muerto scene at least once a day! More in love with the "special something" of this film that makes it greater phàn nàn the sum of its parts. Sure, there are areas that could be improved--for example, I don't think they needed to tướng quote popular songs as much as they do; it's funny here, but cliched now in animation. There is a beautiful message of love and forgiveness that is expressed not only in the dialog but also visually, with expressive, spiraling color...it's just magnificent and striking.

You MUST see this movie. While overshadowed by some blocks and being chilly this is colourfully heart warming, very funny, and easily rivals the other two.
My, almost 4yo, daughter's fave and ranks highly in Mum & Dad's chart too.
Such a vivid backdrop to tướng a story as old as time, with solid friends vying for the heart of a girl, but Maria's strong character shines through and the weaving stories of love and friendship are beautifully told.
My daughter loves to tướng play with pretend Manolo and Maria, elements of both the characters ave story sparking imagination and questions.
Visually clever and superbly bound together with fun mariachi covers and original tracks that have been on repeat in our house since the original cinema trip, it's been hard trying to tướng explain that we can't see again there ví am fully expecting to tướng wear it the blu ray.
